The KITLV-Jakarta 2026 acquisition mission commenced in Lampung Province, which is also known by its traditional name, “Sang Bumi Ruwa Jurai”. The team engaged with local publishers and historians to explore the region’s diverse cultural entities and vibrant literacy movement. This successful expedition concluded with the acquisition of approximately 322 local publications for future historical research and preservation.

Lampung is home to Lampungese and non-Lampungese ethnic groups. Arman Az, a historian and the recipient of Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship 2022 mentioned that the Lampungnese are divided into two cultural entities: Sai Batin and Pepaduan. Sai Batin refers to the communities inhabiting the coastal regions, and Pepaduan represents those residing in the hinterlands. Meanwhile, non-Lampungnese ethnics came from other regions in Indonesia, such as Java and Bali. Both Lampungese and non-Lampungese ethnic groups have synergized in preserving the region.

In Metro City, seven cultural heritage sites are meticulously preserved. Among these is the Dokters woning, which now serves as the Metro Historical Information House. A significant portion of their photographic archives is sourced from Digital Collections of Leiden University Libraries.
On 9-14 February, the acquisition team conducted a series of visits to local publishers and engaged in discussions with literacy advocates, artists, authors, and historians. The dedication of the Lampung communities to cultural heritage shines through in their extensive published materials.
Adi Setiawan, a renowned author and historian, expressed his commitment to present his published works to the team. He hoped that his publications would serve as a valuable resource for future researchers and historical practitioners.
